Making a Baggage Claim
If in the unlikely event your baggage has been delayed or damaged and you wish to submit a claim please note all claims must be submitted in writing. Please include all relevant receipts and your ten-digit baggage reference number and send it to your nearest Customer Care address. These can be found in the Contact Us section. Book Your Baggage in Advance
If your booking was made on aerlingus.com you can avail of an online discount and book your baggage for all applicable routes up to two hours hours prior to departure.
You will need to know your Booking Reference as well as the Departure
Airport, Arrival Airport and the email address used to make your
booking.

Cabin/Carry-On Baggage Allowance
Aer Lingus flights (Shorthaul & Longhaul)
- Baggage is restricted to one piece per passenger.
- The maximum dimensions for a cabin bag are: 55cm x 40cm x 20cm or 22in x 16in x 8in.
- Baggage must weigh under 10 kgs/22lbs and be small enough to fit in overhead bins or under your seat.
- These limits are strictly enforced.
- Additional small items (camera, personal stereo, overcoat, handbag or laptop) are allowed.
- EU security rules regarding liquids, gels and aerosols in cabin baggage apply. More details of these rules can be found by reading the Prohibited Items Factsheet on aerlingus.com.
- Flights departing the USA are subject to TSA security rules. Details of these rules can be found by clicking here: tsa.gov.
- Passengers in Row 1, or at an emergency exit, MUST store baggage in an overhead bin.
- Baggage is restricted to one piece per passenger.
- The maximum dimensions for a cabin bag are: 43cm x 28cm x 20cm or 17in x 11in x 8in.
- Baggage must weigh under 7kgs/15lbs and be small enough to fit in overhead bins or under your seat.

Carriage of Animals & Pets
- We do not accept Animals/Pets on shorthaul flights, (Ireland, UK, Europe). This is due to insufficient ventilation in the cargo hold on our shorthaul airbus fleet.
- Animals/Pets can be booked on direct flights between Ireland and New York, Boston, Chicago and Orlando on Aer Lingus flights only. All animals will be transported in the Cargo Hold.
- At time of booking, Aer Lingus Reservation staff must be informed if you plan to travel with a pet and or animal. Separate procedures apply for passengers travelling with Service Animals (Seeing Eye Dogs).

Due to industry reports of serious damage to aircraft as a result of
dogs becoming loose in aircraft holds, the following breeds of dogs are
not to be carried under any circumstances on any Aer Lingus aircraft.

- Argentino
- Fila Brazillero
- Mastiff
- Pit Bull
- Tosa
- PET EXPRESS will make the arrangements to ship your pet(s) to Ireland on behalf of Aer Lingus. Contact Pet Express at 1-866-PET-MOVE or visit their website at petexpress.us. Final transit destination for animals/pets transported from North America by Aer Lingus is Dublin. Please note: animals cannot be shipped from the USA on Fridays or Saturdays.
- Pets (cats & dogs only) can be booked as excess baggage by contacting Aer Lingus reservations. There is a €160 per flight sector per crate payable at the airport on the day of departure.
If the passenger is not travelling with the animal, or for the carriage of any animal other than household pets, they will be booked as cargo. Bookings will only be confirmed at the earliest 14 days prior to travel.
Carriage of Electrical Equipment
Cameras
Camera Equipment can be carried when travelling with Aer Lingus. The normal checked/cabin baggage rules apply. There is no requirement to advise Aer Lingus before hand that you are carrying these items. It is the passengers responsibility to ensure they are packed in order to prevent damage, as airlines do not accept responsibility for perishable, fragile, or valuable items.
DVDs
DVD's can be carried when travelling with Aer Lingus. The normal checked/cabin baggage rules apply. There is no requirement to advise Aer Lingus before hand that you are carrying these items. It is the passenger's responsibility to ensure they are packed in order to prevent damage, as airlines do not accept responsibility for perishable, fragile, or valuable items.
DVD's are permitted to be played inflight on laptops with DVD drive, except during taxi, take-off, initial climb, approach and landing.
Gameboys
Gameboys can be carried when traveling with Aer Lingus. The normal checked/cabin baggage rules apply. There is no requirement to advise Aer Lingus beforehand that you are carrying these items. It is the passenger's responsibility to ensure they are packed in order to prevent damage, as airlines do not accept responsibility for perishable, fragile, or valuable items.
Gameboys are permitted to be played inflight except during taxi, take-off, initial climb, approach and landing.
Laptops

Laptops with CD ROM or DVD drive, and palmtop organizers are permitted to be used in flight but not during taxi, take-off, initial climb, approach and landing.
PC's

PC's are not permitted to be used on board.
Portable TV
Portable TV's (no larger than 14" screen) can be carried when travelling with Aer Lingus. The normal checked/cabin baggage rules apply. It is the passenger's responsibility to ensure they are packed in order to prevent damage, as airlines do not accept responsibility for perishable, fragile, or valuable items.
Stereo Equipment

Art Easels

Crystal
Crystal can be carried when travelling with Aer Lingus. The normal checked/cabin baggage rules apply. There is no requirement to advise Aer Lingus before hand that you are carrying these items. It is the passenger's responsibility to ensure they are packed in order to prevent damage, as airlines do not accept responsibility for perishable, fragile, or valuable items.
Hats
Hats can be carried when travelling with Aer Lingus. The normal checked/cabin baggage rules apply. There is no requirement to advise Aer Lingus before hand that you are carrying these items. It is the passenger's responsibility to ensure they are packed in order to prevent damage, as airlines do not accept responsibility for perishable, fragile, or valuable items.
Large Gift Wrapped Items
Large Gift Wrapped Gifts can be carried when travelling with Aer Lingus, these packages could be subject to a security check. The normal checked/cabin baggage rules apply. There is no requirement to advise Aer Lingus before hand that you are carrying these items. It is the passenger's responsibility to ensure they are packed in order to prevent damage, as airlines do not accept responsibility for perishable, fragile, or valuable items.
Liquids
Liquids are not permitted onboard unless they are in individual containers with a capacity not greater than 100 millilitres or equivalent and contained in one transparent re-sealable plastic bag of a capacity not exceeding 1 litre. The contents of the plastic bag shall fit comfortably and the bag shall be completely closed.
Liquids include gels, pastes, lotions, liquid/solid mixtures and the contents of pressurised containers, e.g. toothpaste, hair gel, drinks, soups, syrups, perfume, shaving foam, aerosols and other items of similar consistency. Exemptions may be granted if the liquid is:
- to be used during the trip and is either required for medical purposes or a special dietary requirement, including baby food. When requested to, the passenger shall provide proof of authenticity of the exempted liquid; or
- obtained airside beyond the point where boarding passes are controlled from outlets that are subject to approved security procedures as part of the airport security programme, on condition that the liquid is packed in a bag that is both tamper evident and displays satisfactory proof of purchase at that airport on that day; or
- obtained in the security restricted area from outlets that are subject to approved security procedures as part of the airport security programme; or
- obtained at another Community airport, on condition that the liquid is packed in a bag that is both tamper evident and displays satisfactory proof of purchase at airside at that airport on that day; or
- obtained on board an aircraft of a Community air carrier, on condition that the liquid is packed in a bag that is both tamper evident and displays satisfactory proof of purchase on board that aircraft on that day.
Paintings
Paintings can be carried when travelling with Aer Lingus. The normal checked/cabin baggage rules apply. There is no requirement to advise Aer Lingus before hand that you are carrying these items. It is the passenger's responsibility to ensure they are packed in order to prevent damage, as airlines do not accept responsibility for perishable, fragile, or valuable items.
Pictures
Pictures can be carried when travelling with Aer Lingus. The normal checked/cabin baggage rules apply. There is no requirement to advise Aer Lingus before hand that you are carrying these items. Power Tools
Power Tools can be carried when travelling with Aer Lingus, with the exception of those that are powered by petrol/gasoline or any flammable fuels. The normal checked baggage rules apply. Toolboxes

Wedding Cake
Wedding Cakes can be carried when travelling with Aer Lingus. The normal checked/cabin baggage rules apply. There is no requirement to advise Aer Lingus before hand that you are carrying these items. It is the passenger's responsibility to ensure they are packed in order to prevent damage, as airlines do not accept responsibility for perishable, fragile, or valuable items.
Wedding Dress
Wedding Dresses can be carried when travelling with Aer Lingus. The normal checked/cabin baggage rules apply. There is no requirement to advise Aer Lingus before hand that you are carrying these items. It is the passenger's responsibility to ensure they are packed/ boxed and should be able to fit in the overhead compartment in order to prevent damage, as airlines do not accept responsibility for perishable, fragile, or valuable items.

Carriage of Musical Instruments
- A musical instrument can be carried in the cabin provided it is within the hand baggage size/weight limits.
(The maximum dimensions for a cabin bag are - 55cms x 40cms x 20cms or 22ins x 16ins x 8ins)
(The maximum weight for a cabin bag is - 10kgs/22lbs or 7kgs/15lbs for Aer Lingus Regional flights)
It must be small enough to fit in the overhead bin or under the seat in front. - If the instrument is larger than the permitted hand baggage size, e.g. Cello, and the passenger wishes to carry the item in the cabin, they have to purchase an additional seat for the instrument (this can be done online and normal charges and taxes apply). There will be no baggage allowance for the purchase of an additional seat for the instrument. The instrument should be booked in the name of Cello/A Ms or Harp/A Ms. The actual weight of the instrument including its carry case, must not exceed 75kgs/165lbs.
- Larger musical equipment (including but not limited to double bass, harps and drums) is unsuitable for carriage in the cabin and must be checked in. If the passenger wishes to carry the instrument in the hold, then a special handling fee applies and it is charged at the same rate as golf equipment and skis (currently €30 online, or €40 at the airport). Normal excess baggage rates will also apply.

Carriage of Sports Equipment
The maximum weight allowable for carriage of sports equipment is 15kgs/33lbs. Normal excess baggage rates apply if the passenger carries excess to this maximum allowance.
Bicycles
Aer Lingus will carry bicycles and tandem bicycles as checked baggage: A maximum of 1 Bicycle per person. For flights between Ireland and North America bicycles are part of the free allowance, normal excess baggage rates apply if the passenger carries excess to the free allowance.
For ALL other flights there is a fee of €40 or equivalent payable at the airport on the day of departure. This fee is charged on an each-way basis for outbound and return journeys.
There is no charge for bicycles for passengers travelling in Business Class.
Aer Lingus permits passengers to travel with bicycles where there is space available.
A maximum of 6 bicycles can be booked on any aircraft. If you are travelling on Aer Lingus regional flights the maximum bicycles allowed is 2 per flight. This is all subject to availability on the day.
Bicycles cannot be booked online.
To book the bicycle the passenger must contact their local reservations office.
To pack bicycles passengers are advised to remove the front wheel and secure it to the frame, lower the handlebars and saddle and place in line with the frame and invert the pedals.
From Amsterdam boxes will be provided at a fee of €20.00.
Diving Equipment
Aer Lingus will carry diving equipment as checked baggage:
Diving equipment can be carried when travelling with Aer Lingus. The normal checked/cabin baggage rules apply. Any excess baggage will be charged at excess rates.
Fishing Equipment
Aer Lingus will carry fishing equipment as checked baggage. Fishing Equipment includes the Fishing Rod, Case and Tackle Basket.
For flights between Ireland and North America fishing equipment is part of the free allowance, normal excess baggage rates apply if the passenger carries excess to the free allowance.
There is no charge for fishing equipment for passengers travelling in Business Class.
Fishing equipment is subject to a fee of €30 or equivalent payable online prior to departure or a fee of €40 or equivalent, payable at the airport on the day of departure. This fee is charged each-way on outbound and return journeys.
Golf Bags
Aer Lingus carry Golf Bags as checked baggage:
For flights between Ireland and North America golf bags are part of the free allowance. Normal excess baggage rates apply if the passenger carries excess to the free allowance.
There is no charge for golf bags for passengers travelling in Business Class.
For all other flights a maximum of 1 golf bag per person is
permitted and a fee of €30 or equivalent payable online prior to
departure or a fee of €40 or equivalent, payable at the airport on the
day of departure applies. This fee is charged each-way on outbound and
return journeys. Excess baggage charges apply if the golf bag is in excess of 15kgs in weight.
If you are travelling on Aer Lingus regional flights the maximum golf bags allowed is 12 golf bags per flight. This is all subject to availability on the day.
Ski
Aer Lingus will carry skis as checked baggage:
For flights between Ireland and North America skis are part of free allowance, normal excess baggage rates apply if the passenger carries excess to the free allowance.
There is no charge for skis for passengers travelling in Business Class. For all other flights a maximum of 1 Pair of skis, boots and poles per person and a fee of €30 or equivalent payable online prior to departure or a fee of €40 or equivalent, payable at the airport on the day of departure applies. This fee is charged each-way on outbound and return journeys.
Surf Boards
Aer Lingus will carry Surf Boards as checked baggage:
For flights between Ireland and North America surfboard is part of the free allowance, normal excess baggage rates apply if the passenger carries excess to the free allowance.
There is no charge for Surf Boards for passengers travelling in Business class.
Surfboards are subject to a fee of €30 or equivalent payable online prior to departure or a fee of €40 or equivalent, payable at the airport on the day of departure. This fee is charged each-way on outbound and return journeys.
Please note that Surf Boards must not exceed 2.77m in length (approx 110 inches) and must be packed in cushioning material such as bubble wrapping so as to protect them against damage.
Wind Surf Equipment
Aer Lingus will carry wind surf equipment as checked baggage:
For flights between Ireland and North America wind surf equipment is part of the free allowance, normal excess baggage rates apply if the passenger carries excess to the free allowance.
There is no charge for wind surf equipment for passengers travelling in Business class.
Wind Surf Equipment cannot be booked online.
To book the wind surf equipment the passenger must contact their local reservations office.
Wind surf equipment is subject to a fee of €40 payable at the airport on the day of departure. This fee is charged each-way on outbound and return journeys. A maximum of 1 Board, 1 Boom, 1 Sail and 1 Mast per person.
No item may exceed 2.77m in length (110 inches). Wind surfing equipment must be packed to avoid damage.
Give sufficient time at check in for security and handling procedures. We recommend you arrive at check-in at least 90-minute pre flight.
All items must be packed so as to protect them against damage and avoid damage to other items of baggage.
Snow Boards
Aer Lingus will carry Snow Boards as checked baggage:
For flights between Ireland and North America Snow Boards are part of free allowance, normal excess baggage rates apply if the passenger carries excess to the free allowance.
There is no charge for Snow Boards for passengers travelling in Business Class.
For all other routes a maximum of 1 Snow Board per person and a fee of €30 or equivalent payable online prior to departure or a fee of €40 or equivalent, payable at the airport on the day of departure applies. This fee is charged each-way on outbound and return journeys.
Sports Guns
Aer Lingus will carry sports guns and ammunition cartridges subject to the following:
- Sport Guns are to be dismantled.
- Sports Guns when dismantled are to be loaded with checked baggage.
- Sport Guns, ammunition and cartridges must be packed separately from other baggage.
- Sport Guns, ammunition and cartridges must be available for inspection by security.
- Ammunition is limited to 5kg per passenger and must be packed in containers of wood, metal, or fireboard with the contents protected against any movement.
- Subject to an extra charge for flights within Europe.
Note: Sports Weapons/Firearms/Ammunition cannot be carried on Aer Lingus regional flights.
Fees For Sports Guns And Ammunition
€40/£32 or equivalent for all flights within Europe. (£37 for flights departing London Heathrow). This fee is payable at the airport on the day of departure. For flights to/from North America sports guns and ammunition may be carried under the normal baggage allowance.
Gas cigarette lighters are prohibited on all flights to and from the USA. Gas cigarette lighters can currently be carried on the person only on UK and European Routes.

Checked Baggage Allowance
Shorthaul flights (Europe)
- Economy - Low fare - Baggage fees apply for each checked bag.
- Economy - Flexifare - Baggage fees apply for 3rd and subsequent checked bags.
- No pooling or sharing of baggage allowances is permitted, even within a party travelling on the same booking.
- A maximum of 9 bags per passenger can be booked on the website.
- A maximum of 20kgs (44lbs) in total checked baggage weight per passenger.
- Excess weight is charged per kilo per flight in excess of the allowance.
- Discount excess weight fee available if the fee is paid up to two hours prior to departure online. Standard excess weight fee is charged at the airport.
- The fees are non-refundable.
Special Items
- Sports Equipment such as golf bags or skis will be charged at the applicable rate.
- Infant baggage allowance is ONE collapsible buggy/stroller only, free of charge.
- Medical equipment (dialysis machines, wheelchairs etc.) are carried free of charge.
- Small musical instruments may qualify as hand baggage. Medium sized instruments may be carried in the cabin if an individual seat for the instrument is purchased.
- If the instrument will not fit in the extra seat, it must be checked in and normal excess baggage rates apply.
Longhaul flights (USA)
Economy Class/Low fare
- Passengers are permitted 1 bag under 23kgs (50lbs) free of charge.
- Baggage fees apply for 2nd and subsequent checked bags.
- A maximum of 9 additional bags per passenger can be booked on the website.
- Bag Size: One bag at 158cms/62ins, second and subsequent bags at 140cms/55ins.
- The weight of any one piece of baggage must not exceed 32Kgs/70lbs.
- Any additional bags and Excess weight (23kgs - 32kgs) will be charged. See the table below
- No pooling or sharing of baggage allowances is permitted, even within a party travelling on the same booking.
- The fees are non-refundable.
- For Aer Lingus journeys between North America and the UK or Continental Europe, the long-haul checked baggage allowance will apply for all flights within the itinerary, unless there is a stopover of more than 14 days in Ireland, then each flight within the itinerary will have the relevant shorthaul or longhaul baggage policy applied to that part of the journey.

- For Aer Lingus journeys between North America and the UK or Continental Europe, the long-haul checked baggage allowance will apply for all flights within the itinerary, unless there is a stopover of more than 14 days in Ireland, then each flight within the itinerary will have the relevant shorthaul or longhaul baggage policy applied to that part of the journey.
Special Items

Shorthaul Baggage fees (Europe)
Pay online up to two hours before departure at a discount or pay the full fee at the airport. See the table below for details.
- Low fare - Baggage fees apply for each checked bag as below. Additional excess fees apply for baggage over the maximum 20kgs (44lbs) in total checked baggage weight per passenger.

For Aer Lingus journeys between North America and the UK or Continental Europe, the long-haul checked baggage allowance will apply for all flights within the itinerary, unless there is a stopover of more than 14 days in Ireland, then each flight within the itinerary will have the relevant shorthaul or longhaul baggage policy applied to that part of the journey.

To protect you against the new threat of liquid explosives, the European Union (EU) has adopted new security rules that restrict the amount of liquids that you can take through security checkpoints. They apply to all passengers departing from airports in the EU whatever their destination.

Aer Lingus accept no liability for items left onboard and it is passenger's responsibilities to ensure they have all their belongings before disembarking the aircraft.

- (D) Explosives and flammable substances, any explosive or highly combustible substances which poses a risk to the health of passengers and crew or the security/safety of the aircraft property including:
- Ammunition
- Blasting caps
- Detonators & fuses
- Explosives and explosive devices
- Replica or imitation explosive material or devices
- Mines & other explosive military stores
- Grenades of all types
- Gas & gas containers e.g. Butane, propane, acetylene, oxygen - in large volume
- Fireworks, flares in any form and other pyrotechnics (including party poppers and toy caps)
- Non safety matches
- Smoke generating canisters or cartridges
- Flammable liquid fluid e.g. Petrol/gasoline, diesel, lighter fluid, alcohol, ethanol
- Aerosol spray paint
- Turpentine & paint thinner
- Alcoholic beverages exceeding 70% by volume (140% proof)
- (E) Chemical and toxic substances, any chemical or toxic substance which poses a risk to the health of passengers and crew or the security/safety of aircraft or property including:
- Acids and alkalis e.g. spillable "wet" batteries.
- Corrosive or Bleaching Substances - e.g. mercury, chlorine
- Disabling or incapacitating sprays - e.g. mace, pepper spray, tear gas
- Radioactive material - e.g. medicinal or commercial isotopes
- Poisons
- Infectious or biological hazardous material e.g. infected blood, bacteria and viruses
- Material capable of spontaneous ignition or combustion
- Fire extinguishers (except as authorised by fire protocols and as aircraft emergency equipment).
- (F) Liquids:

Liquids are not permitted onboard unless they are in individual containers with a capacity not greater than 100 millilitres or equivalent and contained in one transparent re-sealable plastic bag of a capacity not exceeding 1 litre. The contents of the plastic bag shall fit comfortably and the bag shall be completely closed. Liquids include gels, pastes, lotions, liquid/solid mixtures and the contents of pressurised containers, e.g. toothpaste, hair gel, drinks, soups, syrups, perfume, shaving foam, aerosols and other items of similar consistency. -
Exemptions may be granted if the liquid is:
- to be used during the trip and is either required for medical purposes or a special dietary requirement, including baby food. When requested to, the passenger shall provide proof of authenticity of the exempted liquid; or
- obtained airside beyond the point where boarding passes are controlled from outlets that are subject to approved security procedures as part of the airport security programme, on condition that the liquid is packed in a bag that is both tamper evident and displays satisfactory proof of purchase at that airport on that day; or
- obtained in the security restricted area from outlets that are subject to approved security procedures as part of the airport security programme; or
- obtained at another Community airport, on condition that the liquid is packed in a bag that is both tamper evident and displays satisfactory proof of purchase at airside at that airport on that day; or
- obtained on board an aircraft of a Community air carrier, on condition that the liquid is packed in a bag that is both tamper evident and displays satisfactory proof of purchase on board that aircraft on that day.
The following prohibited items shall not be placed in checked-in baggage/hold baggage:
- Explosives, including detonators, fuses, grenades, mines and explosives.
- Gases; Propane, butane.
- Flammable liquids, including Gasoline, methanol.
- Flammable solids and reactive substances, including Magnesium, firelighters, fireworks flares.
- Oxidizers and organic peroxides, including Bleach, car body repair kits.
- Toxic or infectious substances, including rat poison, infected blood.
- Radioactive material, including medicinal or commercial isotopes.
- Corrosives, including mercury, vehicle batteries.
- Vehicle fuel system components which have contained fuel.
- Guns are to be dismantled.
- They will only be carried in the baggage hold of the aircraft.
- They must be packed separately from other baggage.
- They must be packed one gun per case.
- They must be available for inspection by security.
- Ammunition/cartridges must also be loaded in the baggage hold and must be available for inspection.
- They will be subject to a max baggage allowance of 30k including arms and ammunition.
- All government and legal regulations must be complied with.
- All documentation and licenses are the passengers responsibility.
- Subject to an extra charge for the carriage of sports guns and ammunition.
Note: Sports Weapons/Firearms/Ammunition cannot be carried on Aer Lingus regional flights.
Fees For Sports Guns And Ammunition
€30/£20/AED125 for all flights within Europe. (£25 departing London Heathrow). For flights to/from North America sports guns and ammunition may be carried under the normal baggage allowance.
Unaccompanied Baggage
From North America
Unaccompanied baggage will not be accepted at check-in and may only be carried as CARGO any baggage carried as cargo needs to be pre-booked through local Freight Forwarder.
All other Routes
Unaccompanied Baggage will not be accepted at check-in and may only be carried as CARGO.
Any baggage carried as cargo needs to be pre-booked through local Air Freight Company.
