Visiting Las Vegas

As self-proclaimed ‘Entertainment Capital of the World’, any first-time visitor would surely find it hard to disagree with this description. With its massive casinos and numerous palatial hotels, some of which are the biggest in the US, ‘Sin City’ is a city like no other. As if to underscore this image the Sphinx at the Luxor Hotel is, for example, nearly twice as big as the Sphinx in Egypt!

Las Vegas is the brightest place on Earth as seen from space and it ranks as one of the most visited cities in the world. Las Vegas is also known as the ‘Wedding Capital of the World’ conducting over 150 weddings each day.

While best-known historically for its gambling casinos, in recent decades Las Vegas has hugely diversified its range of entertainment options to cater for many different tastes - not just gambling.

We’ve put together ‘5 Things To Do In Las Vegas’ as a teaser. Just of a very small sample of many.

1. The Las Vegas Strip

At just over 7 kms, the strip can be walked or can be accessed by a 27/4 bus service. The Monorail provides another option. Guided tours are also available, customised to your interests. These guided tours can really add something special to the experience, providing interesting background information and stories about the rich and famous. To experience the Strip in its full illuminated glory it’s best to visit it at night.

2. The Sphere

In typical Las Vegas style, the Sphere is the world’s largest spherical structure. It provides a unique immersive (think ‘virtual reality’) entertainment experience like no other venue. U2 were the first act to perform there and their series of sold-out shows, accompanied by astounding visuals shared on social media brought the Sphere world-wide attention. Be warned though - event tickets get snapped up quickly.

3. Bellagio Casino and Fountains

Bellagio’s massive fountains will be familiar to anyone who’s seen a TV show or movie set in Vegas. The fountains jets shoot water skyward every 15-30 minutes and are magically choreographed to music. The fountains are simply a ‘must-see’.

4. Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area

Anyone who’s seen old western films may recognise the scenery as many of these movies were shot here. It’s less than a 30-minute drive from the city so it can provide a nice reprieve from the full-on vibe of Vegas. Some of the activities available include bird watching, rock climbing, hiking, camping, mountain biking and horse-riding; there’s something for everyone.

5. Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition

With over 350 artifacts on display along with full-scale room recreations the exhibition provides a window into the tragedy of the Titanic’s unexpected sinking. View an exact replica of the famous Grand Staircase, perhaps the most ostentatious feature of the Titanic. You can even touch an iceberg! The exhibition is located in the famous Luxor Hotel, yet another reason to visit!
