Visiting Knock and the West of Ireland

Knock in County Mayo is nestled in the rugged landscape of the west of Ireland. Due to its significant religious history, it has become a very popular place of pilgrimage attracting visitors from around the world. Knock provides visitors with an opportunity for some sanctuary and peace, offering them a respite from the frenetic pace of modern life and its associated stresses and strains.

  • Knock Shrine: Officially recognised as an international Shrine by Pope Francis in March 2021 https://www.knockshrine.ie
  • Croagh Patrick: Known locally as ‘The Reek’ this holy mountain is another popular pilgrimage destination. Climbing it is a challenge, and a certain level of fitness is required. Completing the climb is rewarded with stunning views of Clew Bay and the surrounding countryside.
  • The ‘Céide Fields’ are remnants of an ancient Stone Age ‘field system’ which provided an early blueprint for organised agriculture. Estimated to be at least 5,000 years old, they are the oldest known fields in the world. The award-winning visitor centre includes audio-visual shows, exhibitions and panoramic viewing platforms with dramatic views of the sea and surrounding land.
  • Westport is a vibrant ‘heritage’ town with a variety of shops, restaurants, cafes, bars and cultural attractions. No visit to Westport is complete without experiencing a good old Irish music ‘trad session’ - fiddles, bodhráns, guitars and accordions all blending beautifully to produce Irish music’s unique and ethereal sound. There are regular, all-year round sessions in many of the pubs including the famous Matt Molloy’s pub.
  • Achill Island: Explore this picturesque island (accessible by a road bridge) with its beautiful beaches, cliffs, and charming villages. Megalithic tombs and forts can be seen at Slievemore, along the Atlantic Drive and on Achillbeg.
  • Great Western Greenway: Built on a former railway line. Mayo’s Great Western Greenway is a scenic 49km route from Westport to Achill Island. You’ll need a full day if you want to cycle the whole route or else bike hire companies can pick you up at various points.
