Things to do and places to see in Pisa

Known as the city of the leaning tower, Pisa has so much more to offer. Buildings and monuments from Roman times are one of its attractions.

  • Tower of Pisa
The Leaning Tower of Pisa is one of the most remarkable architectural structures from medieval Europe. It stands at 60 metres and until 1990 was leaning at about a 10 degree angle - in fact, it started to lean even during its construction, due to the characteristics of the city’s soil.
  • Piazza dei Miracoli
The Campo dei Miracoli in Pisa, the Square of Miracles in English, was proclaimed a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1987. The three structures found in the piazza have been considered central to religious life of the city, symbolizing the main stages of a human life: the Baptistery represents birth, the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta life and the Camposanto alludes to death.
  • Mura di Pisa
The Walls (Mura) of Pisa allow the visitor to see the city in a different perspective, 11 meters above ground. The building of the Pisa’s Walls began in 1154 in the area of the city north of the Arno river; the construction lasted until 1161, followed by a further completion in 1284.

How to get from the airport to the city centre?

Being adjacent to the city, Pisa Airport is distant only 6 km/3.5 miles from the city centre, and the journey takes around 15 minutes. The best ways to get there are by taxi or tram.

Taxi: The taxi rank can be found at the exit of the Arrivals Terminal and is the fastest way to get to town. The journey takes 5–10 minutes and the fare will be around €6–8.

Tram: The Pisa Mover is a tram that connects the airport to the Pisa Centrale train station in about 5 minutes, with a halfway stop at the San Giusto/Aurelia station. The single ticket costs €2,70.
