Maximum Dimensions and Weights

• Carry-on baggage must meet the size and weight limits which are strictly enforced at the airport.
• Carry-on baggage must fit inside the gauge units at the airport (including wheels and handles).

 

 

Carry-on Baggage - Travel within Europe (Aer Lingus flights)

• All customers are allowed to travel with a 10kg bag and a small personal item (handbag or laptop bag).
• There are two options for your 10kg bag:
  
  (1) A 10kg bag can be brought on board the aircraft only if you have purchased a "10kg Carry-on bag" or have this included as part of your booking. This is included for:
  • Silver, Platinum and Concierge AerClub members. This applies to the member only and not travelling companions.
  • Bookings made with Plus, Advantage or Aer Space fare types and Economy fares purchased via British Airways.
  • The accompanying adult travelling with an infant.
  • Customers connecting to/from an Aer Lingus transatlantic flight or a connecting flight with an interline partner.
  
  Please note if a 10kg carry-on bag is included, the drop off option does not apply and you need to take your 10kg bag on board with you.
  
  (2) Customers who do not have a 10kg carry-on bag as part of their booking can still travel with a 10kg bag but this must be dropped off at check-in free of charge.
• Customers who do not have a 10kg carry-on bag as part of their booking and bring a 10kg bag to the boarding gate, will be charged a €35 fee to have their bag placed in the aircraft hold.
• All customers can bring a small personal item (handbag or laptop bag) on board the aircraft. This must be stowed under the seat in front of you, keeping the overhead space free for 10kg bags.

 

Carry-on Baggage - Travel within Europe (Aer Lingus Regional flights)

• All customers are allowed to travel with a 7kg carry-on bag and a small personal item (handbag or laptop bag).
• 7kg carry-on bag can be brought on board the aircraft and stored in the overhead locker, subject to availability.
• If connecting from our Aer Lingus Regional service to our Aer Lingus transatlantic service, the 7kg carry-on baggage allowance will apply for both parts of the journey.
• All customers can bring a small personal item (handbag or laptop bag) on board the aircraft. This must be stowed under the seat in front of you, keeping the overhead space free for 7kg bags.

• All customers are allowed to travel with a 10kg carry-on bag and a small personal item (handbag or laptop bag).

General Carry-on Baggage Guidelines

• You must be able to place your own carry-on baggage into the overhead locker without assistance.
• Occasionally we may have to check your carry-on baggage into the hold due to stowage space limitations, or if your baggage is over the allowed dimensions and weight.
• If you're seated in row 1, economy or business class, or at an emergency exit, you must store your baggage in an overhead locker.
• If your journey is partly or entirely with another airline your allowance may differ. Check details on the website of the airline you are travelling with.
• EU security rules regarding liquids, gels and aerosols in carry-on baggage apply.
• Flights departing the USA are subject to TSA security rules.

 

Use of Portable Electronic Devices (PEDs) on Aer Lingus flights

• Recent changes to EASA regulations now permit that Portable Electronic Devices (e.g. mobile phones, tablet devices, e-readers, MP3 players) no longer have to be switched to 'OFF' during take-off and landing.
• It is now acceptable to use these devices during all phases of flight (except during refuelling and low visibility landings) once they have been switched to 'Flight / Airplane Mode'.
• Laptops and larger PEDs (greater than 1kg in weight or which cannot be held in one hand) shall be stowed during taxi, take-off and landing (or at any other time if requested by the flight crew).
• Devices must not obstruct passenger exit from a seat row in the event of an emergency.
• Note: Aer Lingus A330 aircraft are Wi-Fi and GSM enabled (customers must follow on-board procedures for use).

Checked Baggage Guidelines - Travel within Europe

• Baggage allowance is per passenger, per direction.
• Baggage fees apply for all economy SAVER fares. The fees per weight are calculated based destination (near, mid and far) and booking channel (online or airport).
• PLUS/ADVANTAGE fare customers enjoy the benefit of having one 20kg bag included in their fare.
• Pay for bags online up to two hours before departure at a discount or pay the full fee at the airport.
• Infants are allocated one collapsible buggy/stroller per infant or child free of charge, plus one of the following items: car seat, booster seat or travel cot.
• Excess weight is charged at the airport per kilo, per direction in excess of the allowance.
• Pooling or sharing of baggage allowance is permitted when customers in the same booking are checking in together.
• If you booked through a travel agent, please contact them in relation to your baggage allowance.
• Baggage fees are non-refundable.

General North America Checked Baggage Rules

• Excess baggage charges will apply for any additional checked bags or weight over the allowance permitted depending on fare type.
• The weight of any one piece of baggage cannot exceed 32kg (70lb).
• Sports equipment and musical instruments can be carried as part of your free checked baggage allowance or as part of an additional purchased allowance if required.
• For infant bookings (children under 2 years), a 10kg/22lb checked baggage allowance is included in your booking. In addition, infants are allowed one collapsible buggy/stroller plus one of the following items: car seat, booster seat or travel cot free of charge.
• For Aer Lingus operated routes, up to three bags can be booked online up to two hours before departure.
• For itineraries which include partner airline flights, one bag can be booked online. (Additional bags may be paid for locally at the airport).
• For Aer Lingus journeys between North America and the U.K. or continental Europe, the transatlantic checked baggage allowance will apply for all flights within a single itinerary or reservation. Relevant European or transatlantic policies shall apply to itineraries booked as separate reservations.
• Pooling or sharing of baggage allowance is permitted when with a travel partner within the same booking and when checking in together.
• Baggage fees are non-refundable.
• Essential items, such as personal medication, money, passports and other identification documents should be packed in your cabin baggage and not in checked baggage.

Connecting Itineraries

For Aer Lingus journeys between North America and the UK or Continental Europe, the checked baggage allowance will apply for all flights within the itinerary, unless there is a stopover of more than 12 hours in Ireland. In this case, each flight within the itinerary will have the relevant short haul or long haul baggage policy applied to that part of the journey.

Relevant short haul or long haul policies shall apply to itineraries booked as separate reservations.

If your booking was made on aerlingus.com, you can book bags in advance. You will need to know your Booking Reference as well as the Departure Airport, Arrival Airport and the email address used to make your booking.

If you did not book online you will need to contact our Reservations Department in order to book your bags in advance.

• Aer Lingus will through-check baggage as a courtesy onto any carrier that has a baggage agreement in place. Documentation of the itinerary showing Aer Lingus and partner carrier flights on the same ticket is required.

General Sports Equipment Rules

• Pay online prior to day of departure: Sports equipment, (golf bags, fishing equipment, surf boards, skiing equipment and snowboards) will be charged at a rate of €40.00 or equivalent per item each way.
• Pay at the airport on day of departure: Sports equipment, (golf bags, fishing equipment, surf boards, skiing equipment and snowboards) will be charged at a rate of €50.00 or equivalent per item each way.
• Customers can travel with a maximum of 1 item per passenger excluding infants.
• The maximum weight allowable for carriage of such equipment described is 23kgs.
• If the weight exceeds this limit, customers will be charged excess baggage fees in addition to the flat rate charge.
• Bicycles, diving gear and windsurfing equipment cannot be booked online.
• Bicycles must be pre-booked by contacting the aerlingus.com helpdesk. Bicycles will be charged at a rate of €50.00 or equivalent per item each way. A maximum of six pre-booked bicycles may be carried on each aircraft. Bicycles must be boxed or bagged. To pack bicycles customers are advised to remove the front wheel and secure it to the frame, lower the handlebars and saddle and place in line with the frame and invert the pedals.
• Electric bicycles may only be carried if the battery is removed and will be accepted as a normal bicycle and the rules above will apply.
• Electric Scooters are not permitted for carriage unless the scooter is being used as a genuine mobility device. Customers will have to provide a doctor’s letter confirming a genuine need for this. If a scooter’s battery is non-removable it shall be secured safely on the aircraft.
• The fees are non-refundable.
• Sports guns cannot be booked online and are carried only under the following conditions:
  • Our reservations department receives relevant details at least 48 hours before travel.
  • Sport Guns are dismantled and packed one per case.
  • Sport Guns, ammunition and cartridges must be packed separately from other baggage.
  • Sport Guns, ammunition and cartridges must be available for inspection by security.
  • Ammunition is limited to 5kg per passenger.
  • Ammunition must be packed in containers of wood, metal, or fireboard with the contents protected against any movement.
  • Only the licensed firearm owner may check-in a Sport Gun upon presentation of their valid Firearm License at check-in.
• Note: Sports Weapons/Firearms/Ammunition cannot be carried on Aer Lingus Regional flights.

Travel to/from North America

• Sports equipment is carried under the category of normal baggage allowance rules/restrictions. It is not possible to carry bicycles to/from Toronto due to aircraft constraints.

• A musical instrument can be carried in the cabin provided it is within the cabin baggage size/weight limit.
• If the instrument is larger than the permitted hand baggage size, and the customer wishes to carry it in the cabin, they have to purchase an additional (window) seat for the instrument. This can be done online and normal taxes and charges apply. The instrument should be booked in the family name of the guest and the first or given name being 'ONE' and that of the instrument e.g. 'SMITH/ONE CELLO MS' or 'SMITH/ONE SAXOPHONE MR'. The weight of the instrument including its carry case, must not exceed 75kgs/165lbs.
• Larger musical instruments on short haul flights (including but not limited to double bass, harps and drums) are unsuitable for carriage in the cabin. However, these items may be carried in the hold of the aircraft for a special fee of EUR 40.00 online and EUR 50.00 at the airport (subject to change).
• Larger musical instruments on long haul flights (to/from North America) are carried as part of the standard baggage allowance. If it is carried in addition to the standard allowance, the piece will be carried at the rate for an extra piece. This fee is charged per passenger, each way.
• The maximum dimensions that Aer Lingus Regional can accommodate an instrument to travel on a seat are: width x depth x height = 41 cms x 58 cms x 94 cms (16 ins x 23 ins x 37 ins.) In order for the instrument to fit safely and securely on the aircraft it is the customer's responsibility to ensure that the instrument is within these dimensions prior to purchasing a seat.
• Customers travelling on Aer Lingus Regional who have purchased a seat for their musical instrument are asked to check in at their airport of departure as opposed to checking in online. This is so that the check-in agent can determine the exact weight of the instrument including its carry case and to ensure that the seat next to the passenger is blocked and reserved only for the instrument.

General Animals & Pets Rules

• Pets must be booked to travel with a pet agent, and they will be carried in the aircraft hold.
• Animals presented for transport at passenger check-in, will not be accepted under any circumstance.

Travelling from Ireland to North America

• All household pets (cats & dogs only) travelling from Ireland to North America must be booked through a pet agent and they will be carried in the aircraft hold.
• Animals presented for transport at passenger check-in won’t be accepted under any circumstances.

Travelling from North America to Ireland

• All household pets (cats & dogs only) travelling to Ireland from North America must travel in the aircraft hold.
• If a pet is arriving into Ireland from the USA, it must have a compliance check booked with Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine staff in advance of arrival.

• All pets must be accompanied by their owner or an authorised person, please see the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine rules on pet travel.
• Animals cannot be shipped from North America on Fridays or Saturdays.
• Dublin must be the final destination for all animals departing North America on Aer Lingus flights.
• No live animals can be carried on our A321neo LR aircraft as the cargo holds are not ventilated.

 

Carriage of Animals & Pets on Aer Lingus Regional flights

• At this time, if your flight or any part of your journey is with Aer Lingus Regional, operated by Emerald Airlines, the transportation of pets is not permitted.

 

Travelling with Service Animals

• All suitably harnessed assistance dogs can travel in the passenger cabin for free.
• Separate processes apply for passengers travelling with service animals.
• We cannot accept any of the restricted breeds of dog for carriage in either the cabin or hold as assistance dogs or otherwise.
• Please contact us at least 48 hours before you travel.
• On flights from Ireland to the USA, you MUST provide advance notice of your intention to bring your service dog into Ireland to the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, at least 24 hours before your departure time.

Travel within Europe

• Excess weight is charged at the airport per kilo per direction in excess of the allowance.
• No one piece of baggage can exceed 32 kg in weight.
• Necessary medical equipment will be excluded from the excess baggage rules and these items will not be subject to 32 kg maximum weight allowance or excess baggage charge.
