Things to do and places to see in Vienna

Vienna is Austria's capital, largest city, and one of the country's nine states. Vienna provides a charming mix of imperial traditions, music, and charm. The plethora of Baroque structures that characterise Vienna's cityscape were predominantly built during the reigns of Empress Maria Theresia (1740-1780) and Franz Joseph (1848-1916), who was significantly responsible for the city's monumental architecture. There are plenty of things to see and try. Our top sites are listed below:

  • Hofburg:: For more than six centuries, the Habsburg was the formal house of every Austrian ruler since 1275. It is undoubtedly the most historically significant of Vienna's palaces. This complex has multiple structures from various periods, featuring architectural flourishes from the Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, and Rococo traditions. The oldest part of the complex, the Royal Chapel (Burgkapelle) dates from the 13th century. It is the official residence of the Austrian President. There are locations inside Hofburg like Franz Joseph Apartments, Empress Elisabeth Apartments & Sisi Museum that are worth paying the visit.
  • St. Stephen's Cathedral: St. Stephen's Cathedral is the most popular attraction in Vienna. With its 137-metre-high spire and richly decorated roof, it's the city's most important Gothic edifice and represents eight centuries of architectural history. When you enter the cathedral you will observe a romanesque giant's door constructed in 1443. Bishop's Gate & Singer Gate dates back to the early 14th century. The St. Stephen's Cathedral is worth the visit, and a variety of English language guided tours of St. Stephen's Cathedral are available.
  • Vienna Zoo: The Schönbrunn Zoo was established during Emperor Francis I's time. Founded in 1752 it's the oldest continually operating zoo in the world. The zoo hosts more than 750 species which includes giant pandas. Schönbrunn Zoo is worth paying your visit.
